Obsidian - Baths (2013 - Anticon)
Will Wiesenfeld, it’s the real name of Baths, he’s a brilliant producer from L.A. In 2010 he has debut with Cerulean, beautiful and emotive LP of glinting poptronica and with that album he was placed in the same context of people like Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, and many others.
The 28th may 2013 was announced the release by Anticon of the new Album of Baths, called Obsidian. I have read a little story behind the creation of this album, in fact, Will have a debilitating bout by E. Coli, which forced him to live all days walking like a zombie between bed, couch and bathroom, totally a bad experience. In these days has decided to erase all the things he has composed until that day and start to produce something more dark, writing stuff with all the apathy that grew inside him.
On an interview for Pitchfork Baths said that he was thinking to change his performing live, he want to be more physical on stage to express better himself, but it is something that he can’t do now because he needs to manage all the samples, effects and sing, so he decided, meanwhile that the tracks are slowly born, to look for some guy who want to spend the next decades with him and playing the tracks on a band.
Obsidian is more “pop” and “hi-fi” respect Cerulean and there is another change in the Baths style, the voice. In this Album Will doesn’t change his voice with a massive rack of effects, that’s a sign of maturity on his style. He wants it to be easier to make out what he wants to transmit when he sing. So Will use less effects and blow out his pretty unadulterated vocals, that it is not so shy but in fact is very strong and direct.
I think Miasma Sky is child of the total apathy and bored that Baths has accumulated during his disease, Miasma it’s a mission of the Skyrim, a role-playing game, although the song talk about a game but there is something more deep, the sound of rain out of the window, a full day spent into a game, something of melanchonic in the voice…there is something that can make you feel locked, like a feeling of claustrophobia. When I listen this song I almost wanted to go out, vent all this apathy grown by Baths during the afternoon, morning or night.
